If you’re following me on twitter @StarCatcher_FL, then you probably saw my tweet today…a quote from singer/musician/actor Lenny Kravitz.
What I love about being on vacation is that it affords me the opportunity to catch up on my dvr and catch shows that I might have missed had I been absorbed in work. In this case, I was able to catch a REALLY great interview with Lenny Kravitz on the Piers Morgan show. Having grown up in the business (some of you may be old enough to remember his mom Roxie Roker…she played Helen Willis on “The Jeffersons“) his interview was full of insight and years of experience, some good some bad. He married and had a BEAUTIFUL and TALENTED daughter with Cosby alum, Lisa Bonet and spent many years struggling with the “affects” of the business while building a career for himself.
”Sometimes I still feel like that kid trying to get a record deal”~Lenny Kravitz. This was Lenny’s response when asked how it feels to have had such a successful career. His answer in my opinion is the reason is so successful. He’s never lost that drive and passion he had when he picked up his first instrument or when he first announced to his mom and dad that entertainment was what he wanted to do with his life. This feeling of not being complacent or comfortable with his craft, the energy that he approaches every new project with is why he is where he is today.
I watch and listen to a lot of actors in this business. Many of whom I’ve know since they first entered the business and it’s amazing how their excitement over the things that meant so much to them in the beginning, diminishes with each passing moment. Long gone are they days when EVERY audition was a big deal and ever present are the “oh, it was a silly audition…I only went because my agent asked me to go” days.
When does that happen? It’s okay to want to grow, set goals and expect better for yourself, but there’s something about that innocent, starry eyed person who walks through the doors of casting for the very first time. We should all feel like that kid trying to get a record deal. I miss those people. Don’t you?
BTW-Finding a picture of Lenny Kravitz is no easy task. They’re all PERECT. I chose one from his portrayal of “Cinna” in The upcoming “Hunger Games”, I just finished the book and I’m so ready for the movie. Enjoy the view, lol!
